Alright, so here is the Book Club episode in which we talk about the book I hated the most so far. I’m really sorry to everyone who liked it, but I did ask for people who enjoyed the book to come to the live recording and nobody did! So it was just me and Chris, two people who really were not impressed with it. I’m sorry, but I tried!
Anyway, this is one of those books that got lauded for things like “vibrant character development” and “telling an uplifting story of the triumph of the human spirit” and I just cannot emphasize enough how little those things rang true for me. The characters seemed flat and barely identifiable from one another, and the story was incredibly depressing except for the last like, 5 pages.
Also you can tell this is written by a man beccause of several dead giveaways: 1) the rape scene which is full of unecessary details and goes on for far too long, 2) the lack of apparent trauma that the women go through as a result of the rape, 3) the male-gaze that consistently comes up despite every man in the story being blind, 4) the fact that every woman apparently wants to fuck a stranger in response to their imminent rape, 5) how long it takes for the Doctor’s Wife to realize she can use those goddamn scissors as a weapon… let me think long enough and I’m sure I could come up with at least three more.
I hope this is still fun to listen to despite all that, and I will see you tomorrow with The Dresden Files!
